Word/phrase meditation involves directing all of one attention to a word or phrase. Meditation slows mental activity, limits thoughts and has been shown to decrease respiration and heart rate. It also impacts on brain-wave activity, increasing alpha waves—slow, low-amplitude brain waves associated with a wakeful, resting state.
